Join today for access to all of our lesson plans

Motivation:

Teacher should create examples ahead of time, getting a feel for the process. Look for and gather examples, if possible. Show your own examples, samples, and demonstrate the process.

Materials:

• 12 X 18" black construction paper
• ebony pencils without erasers (or new pencils with unused erasers)
• regular drawing pencils
• erasers
• colors of tempera paints
• water cups
• 9 X 12" scratch paper
• paper towels

Procedure:

**TEACHER NOTE:
Keep the color photo of this lesson handy, as well as any examples you make and provide so that students can look at them at any time.

1 Use scratch paper to decide on a simple idea for your painting.

2 When you're ready, draw your idea nice and big on a 12 X 18" black sheet.

3 Choose your first color. Stir it well.

4 Dip your ebony pencil into the paint. (Wipe off all excess on the edge of the paint cup, to avoid drips.

5 Press your ebony pencil onto the first spot where you want your first color to go.
-Move your pencil over about 1/8".
-Press it onto the paper again, inside the same spot.
-Move your pencil over again about 1/8".
-Press it onto the paper again.

6 You now have three dots inside the spot where you started.
-Re-dip your pencil and make three new dots.
-Repeat this process until you fill up the spot you started with.

7 When you're ready for a new spot, clean your ebony pencil.
-Rinse your ebony pencil in a cup of water.
-Now wipe the pencil with a paper towel, and get rid of any paint residue that's left.

8 Now you're ready for your next spot and your next color.

9 Repeat steps 4-8 until you have filled every spot on your paper, including your background. (See color photo that comes with this lesson.)

10 Let the painting dry.
